The General Education Development test, most commonly known as the GED test, confirms that the students have education equivalent to a high school graduate. This test is mostly taken by the students who, due to one reason or the other, are unable to complete their high school but wish to get a degree or diploma to indicate that they have an equivalent education.
The test that you take for GED generally checks you on the following subjects:

  • Social studies
  • Quantitative Reasoning
  • Science
  • Language arts

The test is taken in one shift will consume seven and a half hours. But most of the students stretch out the schedule a bit to take the test in a more favorable and comfortable schedule.
All of these subjects hold a significant weightage in the test, and you must be able to pass all of them to make sure that you clear the test. Any student above the age of sixteen can appear for the test. But it is a must that they should not be enrolled in any high school.

How long does it take to earn a GED?


Depending on the style and speed of your learning, the time required for you to prepare for the test might vary from one to four months. If you have spare time, prepare correctly and only after being confident enough register for the test.

There are two different approaches that you can follow while preparing for the GED test.

Option 1: You can opt to focus on one subject at a time and then take the test for that particular subject. This will allow you to pay attention to a single subject and then move on to another one.

Option 2: You can study for all of the subjects simultaneously and then take the test for all the subjects in one go. This option is viable for students who have test centers far away, and it is difficult for them to go there repeatedly.
It is brilliant to take the mock test or download the sample test papers. It will give you an idea about the areas you have strengthened and the ones you need to work on. This is an excellent way to improve your performance for the actual test.
You can figure out a study schedule that works best for you based on your academic prowess. Most students study five times a week for an hour or a half daily. You can make your study sessions most productive by creating an efficient study environment.

Tips to prepare for the GED Test


  • It is essential for you to make notes while studying; this way, you can quickly revise without having thought the whole chapter again. Make notes according to your understanding and follow the system that suits you best.
  • Procrastination is the biggest enemy you will have to conquer while preparing for your GED. You need to create a schedule and stick to it if you want the desired results. You should let your fear or discomfort guide you to delay the study sessions.
  • Figure out the time that works best for you and schedule your study session at that time so that you can focus better. Also, you can include some meditation techniques in your daily timetable, which will not only keep your mind free and peaceful but will also help you to stay focused.
  • Solve the mock test papers so that you can get an idea of your progress and prepare you for what to expect when taking the actual test. Also, make sure to not only solve the papers but also time them and try to finish them by the given deadline.
  • Never be afraid to ask for help. No matter how silly you think, your questions are, never leave them unanswered. You should recognize when you need help and do not shy away from asking the doubts that you might have. There are various apps and websites also present that can help you with the GED preparation.



How long do you have to wait to get the scores?


After studying hard and taking the test, all you will have to do is wait for the test. Most of the time, the students can quickly get the results after a few hours of taking the test. But if you do not get that, it will take a maximum of 24 hours to get the result.
